(PDO) Wines of North Greece
The wine-growing area producing dry red V.Q.P.R.D. `Goumenissa` was recognised in 1979. This area includes the municipality of Goumenissa and the communities of Filyria, Stathi, Gorgopi, Karpi, Griva, Pentalofos, Polypetro and Gerakona in the Kilkis prefecture.
The red varieties of Xinomavro and Negoska are grown in most of the area`s vineyards, on about 200 hectares that extend to the eastern slopes of Mount Paiko and to hills with slight inclines, at an altitude of over 150m. The vines are not irrigated and their yield does not exceed 10.000kg per hectare.
The red V.Q.P.R.D. Goumenissa contains more than 20% Negoska and its alcoholic strength is at least 11.5% vol.. It is left to mature for at least a year in small oak barrels and is deep-coloured with a fruity bouquet and supple taste.
